MAMI

Personality: Though only fifteen years old, Mami does her best to maintain a mature and almost maternal presence. She is an elite Puella Magi, confident and calm in battle, both traits that carry over (at least on a surface level) to her day to day life. Generally gentle-natured, she has a way about feeling emotions very strongly.

Kind and compassionate, she does not easily make friends; she initially believes that the life of a Puella Magi has condemned her to a lonely and friendless existence, and while part of her resents it, she maintains that a life of quiet loneliness is better than no life at all. She hunts witches to save people, to make the world a better place, and earnestly believes that that is all she needs to keep herself going. Though she never has guests and has no one to entertain, her apartment is kept warm, comfortable, rich with comfortable furniture and decoration.

Another side of her shows in Madoka Magica, however. When she discovers that Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki may be forging contracts to become magical girls, a small, hopeful spark is ignited within her. For the first time since making her own contract, Mami realizes that she may have not only someone to fight Witches beside her, but friends, too. She determines that she will mentor the two younger girls and is thrilled beyond belief that they want to fight for the same reason that she does: to keep others safe and to maintain a balance in the world. She quickly comes to adore the two, and is incredibly protective of them when Homura Akemi, a strange and quiet Puella Magi with intentions unknown, threatens Madoka to stay away from the fighting. As said before, however, Mami feels things very strongly: excited at the prospect of true companionship, she becomes reckless and overhasty, incautious when fighting a Witch, and is killed.

Not only is Mami also self-sacrificing, but when it boils down to it, she is willing to sacrifice others, too, when it comes to the greater good – though usually the ‘sacrificing others’ part is accompanied by a full-on mental breakdown. The discovery that magical girls become witches pushes her over the edge, and she melts down and murders Kyoko with the intent of killing them all and then herself to keep them from eventually becoming witches. Her job as a Puella Magi is one that she devotes herself to.

In spite of all of this – or perhaps because of this – Mami is, at heart, a lonely person shouldered with an enormous responsibility that she is determined to uphold. She is a skilled fighter, a crack shot with her rifles, and willing to do whatever it takes to do her duty as a Puella Magi, but also a well-mannered young girl who likes tea, cries when her skirt is flipped up, and yearns more than anything else for true friendship.

Background: Note: Mami is pulled from the spin-off series Oriko Magica, though most aspects of her personality that I cited were from Madoka Magica. She is the exact same character in both series, simply put through a different set of events.

We know little about Mami’s past other than she was born into a rich family, and that her parents died some time ago in a car accident that would have also killed Mami without magical intervention. Kyuubey – a small, alien creature – found her in the throes of death and granted a life-saving wish in exchange for her service as a Puella Magi. (In Mami’s world, Puella Magi are young girls who fight Witches, beings of pure grief that cause disaster wherever they are.)

Mami accepted her fate with the sole regret that her hasty wish saved only herself and not her parents, and began to fight the Witches. In the timeline I’m bringing her from, she began to discover the corpses of other Puella Magi in the city, killed by one of their peers instead of Witches, and attempted to seek out the cause of the murders. She realized that a “black magical girl,” Kirika Kure, was behind the attacks after being attacked herself. Mami was the first Puella Magi able to escape by tricking Kirika and wounding her badly.

Kirika was working with another Puella Magi named Oriko, whose special ability was prescience. Oriko knew that Puella Magi became Witches, and was using Kirika to kill the Magi before they had the opportunity to become Witches and spread their grief to the rest of the world. Mami teamed up with Homura, Kyoko, and Yuma – three other Puella Magi in the city – in order to take Oriko down, but not before they found out that they would eventually become witches.

Lost in grief, they were ready to let themselves die in order to eschew their eventual fates, until Yuma healed them and insisted that they might die someday, but it didn’t have to be that day. Together, they defeated Oriko – but as a final act, she killed Madoka Kaname, a girl who would become the most powerful Puella Magi of all and therefore the most powerful Witch the world had seen.

I am bringing Mami from this point, since almost immediately after, Homura would use her own powers to rewind time and erase this timeline from existence.

Abilities/Additional Notes: Mami is able to transform into a Puella Magi, or magical girl. In this form, she has enhanced speed, agility, pain tolerance, healing capabilities, and magic. She is, by definition, a lich: her soul has been removed from her body and condensed into a yellow gem. As long as the gem is not harmed, drastic injuries on her body can be healed. The gem can be disguised as a ring that the bearer wears, but in order to use its power to transform into a Puella Magi, the girl must wear the gem somewhere on her body. Mami wears hers as a hair pin.

Her offensive magic allows her to summon rifles that she can shoot with amazing accuracy and deadliness. There is little limit to how many rifles she can summon (and she treats them frivolously, usually tossing each rifle away after only shooting it once). She does have a final attack, tiro finale, in which she focuses her energy and summons one enormous shot. It’s a little convoluted to explain, but here is a link to a short clip showing off her powers in detail. She is also able to create magical binds using ribbon that she is able to restrain people with.

Use of her magic taints her soul gem, and if the gems become too tainted, it will crack and she will become a Witch. Puella Magi must cleanse their soul gems by using grief seeds that defeated Witches drop to remove the impurities. Mami will come to Adstring with three grief seeds, since she is not only an elite Puella Magi, but has canonly offered Grief Seeds to other Puella Magi, suggesting that she hoards them when she can.

Sample Journal Post: [The feed cuts on to reveal the smiling face of a blonde teenage girl. She backs up when she realizes that it’s recording, apparently satisfied that she has figured out how to work the device. She clears her throat politely.] Now that I’ve gotten -- [She hesitates, then searches for the term, before deciding on--] ..settled in, I realize that I haven’t properly introduced myself.

I am Tomoe Mami. I’m a student back home – a senior at Mitakihara middle school, actually – but I doubt that means very much here. [The words are spoken with a soft dryness, as if she realizes how silly the introduction might come across as. She ducks her head briefly, inclining it toward the camera, before steadying it and resuming the small, patient smile.] I look forward to learning more about this place and, well.. getting to know all of you, I suppose. Thank you.

[And, formal introduction finished, she wrinkles her nose at the camera and fiddles with some of the buttons until the video ends.]

Sample RP: Mami took a deep breath, steadying herself in boots as she suddenly found herself in the middle of a wasteland. Another Witch, she thought immediately, heart still pounding hard in her chest after the confrontation with Oriko and Kirika – but no. She would know if there was a Witch nearby, be able to sense it –

--be able to feel the other girls close. Instead, there was nothing but dry, hot air and ruined buildings, and she fought the inexplicable lump of tears that formed suddenly in her throat. Between the death of that girl, Madoka, the destruction in the school, finding out that she was (no, not just she; all of the magical girls were) destined to break and become the very things that they were fighting, it was too much.

At least this wasteland wasn’t Mitakihara.

Oriko had been defeated. She and the other girls hadn’t won, but they had survived, with Yuma’s help, and Mami had been expecting to be able to relax. To recuperate and nurse her wounds, both mental and physical, before putting herself out there to fight again. Of course she should have known that she wouldn’t have the chance.

The most important step was figuring out where she was. She cleared her throat, wiped dry eyes on the back of her glove, and started walking, head held high and eyes bright but alert.
